Marble in monument making

Marble has long been used for making monuments, just as granite has; however, in our climate it is not a particularly popular natural stone because of its temperamental nature - it tends to absorb a lot of moisture, crack with changes in temperature and become covered with patina more quickly than granite.

Yet the refinement of marble cannot be compared with granite - marble is most often used for sculptures, statuettes, memorial plaques or special decorative design elements, and in a composition with dark or light granite, a memorial ensemble gains a special dignity when it is adorned with elements of white, pink or honey-coloured marble.

The most popular marble, and the one sculptors love most, is Carrara - an Italian classic, very noble, bluish-white with light grey veining.

Other types of marble can also be used in memorial architecture; the result will always be aesthetic and noble. It should be noted that people sometimes mistakenly think black gravestones are made of marble - they are not; black stone is mostly granite. Black marble very rarely reaches Latvia in large blocks and slabs of this kind - only as a special, exclusive, individual order, and it is very expensive.
