Grave care prices in Latvia: description of services and costs

Regular grave care

With the pace of modern life, heavy workloads, or living in another town or abroad, not everyone is able to visit the cemetery regularly to keep their loved ones' graves in good order.

A grave needs constant attention: in spring the dirt that has built up over the winter has to be removed and the soil prepared, in summer the weeds have to be kept down and the flowers watered, and in autumn the falling leaves have to be cleared regularly.

SoulGarden takes on this care. We offer a professional, careful and systematic approach to grave care.

In this article we look in detail at the cost of grave cleaning in Latvia, the seasonal work needed to maintain a grave, and how to choose the most suitable set of services so that your loved ones' resting place is always tidy and dignified.

Grave cleaning costs by area and type of service

To make budgeting easier, our prices are set according to the area of the grave and the type of service chosen.

All prices are fixed and include transport, the use of professional equipment and special cleaning products, as well as the necessary cemetery fees.

What each service package includes: a detailed description

Each season brings its own grave care needs. To keep everything in perfect order, our specialists follow a proven sequence of work and treat every element of the grave with care.

1. Regular seasonal grave care (annual cycle)

This is the best choice for those who want to be quite certain that the grave will be well kept all year round. The service includes four full visits:

  • Main spring clean (from the beginning of April to the last ten days of the month): the most extensive stage of the work. We weed thoroughly, removing weeds together with their roots, dig over and level the soil, and where needed top up the decorative layer with sand, black soil or mulch.

We carefully clean the granite chippings with a powerful leaf blower and gently wash the decorative pebbles on the grave slabs. We also edge around shrubs and prune them to shape, clean the winter deposits off monuments, grave slabs, borders and benches, and tend the perennial plants.

  • Summer care (twice – in May/June and July/August): maintenance during the active growing season. It includes tidying the area, regular weeding, collecting dry branches, fallen needles, grass and other debris, and planting and tending seasonal flowers.

  • Autumn clean (from the end of October to mid-November, before Candle Night): the final preparation of the grave for winter. We clear all fallen leaves, remove the spent summer plants, cover the grave slab with spruce branches for protection and, in remembrance of the departed, light memorial candles.

Additional services: at the client's request, extra visits can be arranged in summer, for example for regular watering during dry spells. Each additional visit by a specialist is charged separately at €40.00 per visit.

2. One-off autumn grave clean

This service suits you if you look after the grave yourself in summer but would like to leave the heavier autumn work before the Latvian winter to professionals.

The service includes collecting and removing fallen leaves, clearing away withered annuals, carefully covering the grave slab with spruce branches to protect it from frost, and lighting memorial candles on the traditional Latvian Day of Remembrance of the Dead (Candle Night, Svecīšu vakars).

3. Thorough grave cleaning (once a year)

Carried out once a year – in spring or autumn, as you prefer. The service covers the full scope of work, equivalent to the main spring clean: from digging over the soil deeply and cleaning the granite chippings with a leaf blower to careful chemical and mechanical cleaning of stone surfaces, monuments and benches, removing moss, lichen and stubborn dirt.

Why is professional grave care an investment in the future?

Many people think that looking after a grave is only a matter of collecting leaves. But monuments, grave slabs and granite borders are constantly exposed to the environment. Tree pollen, buds, bird droppings, and moss and lichen spores gradually soak into the pores of the stone if they are not cleaned off in time.

Over time a stubborn greyish-green film forms on the polished surface, which can no longer be removed with plain water. The monument then needs costly chemical or mechanical re-polishing.

During regular and thorough grave care, SoulGarden specialists use specialised pH-neutral cleaning products that gently remove organic dirt without damaging the structure of the granite, preserving its mirror-like shine for many decades.

What is not included in the standard grave cleaning price?

We work honestly and openly, so we tell clients about the scope of the services in advance. Standard and thorough grave cleaning do not include construction, restoration or complex landscaping work.

A separate technical estimate is always prepared for such work:

  • Restoration, renewal or repainting of faded inscriptions, portraits and engravings;
  • Re-concreting of monuments, grave slabs or granite borders, levelling of sunken structures and correction of tilt;
  • Replacement of damaged, cracked or missing memorial elements;
  • Major grave landscaping – complete replacement of old sand, chippings, pebbles or granite chippings, first laying a new protective geotextile against weeds;
  • Building, repairing or reinforcing retaining walls on slopes, and repairing concrete steps;
  • Complex landscaping work – removing old stumps, cutting off large, dangerous tree branches and transplanting large plantings.

All of this major grave landscaping and reconstruction work can also be ordered from SoulGarden.

Remote grave care for those who live far away

Latvia has long-standing traditions of caring for graves, and it is customary to visit the graves of departed loved ones several times a year, especially at the Cemetery Festival (Kapusvētki) and on Candle Night. But what can you do if you live in another country or your health prevents you from visiting a cemetery in Riga, Jūrmala or elsewhere in Latvia?

SoulGarden has created a convenient system for remote grave care:

  1. Arranging the service remotely. A contract for regular or one-off grave care can be concluded online from anywhere in the world.
  2. Precise identification of the grave. If you do not remember the exact grave number, our specialists will help you find it using the cemetery's archive records.
  3. Photos before and after the work. After each visit – whether it is the spring clean or lighting memorial candles in autumn – you will receive a detailed photo report by e-mail or in the messaging app of your choice. This lets you check the quality of the work while thousands of kilometres from Latvia.

What does it mean to declare a grave abandoned, and how can you keep your rights to the grave?

Many people in Latvia and Latvians abroad do not even realise that a grave left untended for a long time can be lost in accordance with the law. In Latvia the upkeep of graves is governed by local council binding regulations (for example, the binding regulations of the Riga State City Municipality).

If a grave is not looked after, a legal procedure is started to declare it abandoned.

How the procedure works:

  • Inspection and marking of the grave. Once a year a special commission inspects the cemeteries and identifies untended graves. A report is drawn up for each such grave, and it is marked with a warning sign (a small yellow information plate).
  • Official warning. The cemetery administration sends the grave keeper the report and a warning that the right to maintain the grave may be terminated. After receiving the warning, the keeper has one month to tidy the grave and come to the Cemetery Administration.
  • If the keeper cannot be found. If the cemetery database has no up-to-date contact details, a notice is published in the official gazette "Latvijas Vēstnesis" and on the website of the relevant local council (in Riga – www.riga.lv). In this case, too, one month is given to put things right.
  • Termination of the contract. If the keeper ignores all warnings, after the third annual report has been drawn up and the set deadline has passed, the grave maintenance contract is terminated and the rights to the grave are lost.

Important to know – even if the contract has already been terminated, the rights to a family grave can still be restored, provided it has not yet been assigned to another person.

To do so, you need to submit an application to the Cemetery Administration, sign a new contract and tidy the grave without delay – collect the leaves, weeds and branches, mow the grass and remove unwanted growth.

Timely and regular grave care with SoulGarden is not just about appearance. It helps ensure that your family grave is not declared untended and stays in your family's care.
