Contemporary monument design: granite and glass

A contemporary monument design in black granite and multi-layered glass

When landscaping a grave, most people traditionally choose familiar stone monuments, for example in classic black, grey or red granite, or in fieldstone, so characteristic of Latvia.

To give a monument individuality, it can be complemented with accessories - bronze letters, crosses or metal accents. Such elements give the monument a more expressive design while keeping its overall classic form.

However, for those seeking more individual and exclusive solutions, an aesthetic combination of traditional and contemporary materials is becoming increasingly popular. Monument design brings together the traditional durability of natural granite and the visual lightness of glass, giving the place of remembrance an elegant, contemporary form.

In this article we look at the aesthetic qualities and symbolic meaning of combining granite and glass in monument design, the durability of multi-layered glass elements in the Baltic climate, and the cost of such monuments, the options for personalising them and the main principles of their care.

The aesthetics of new memorial design

An exclusive multi-layered glass monument by SoulGarden in a Jūrmala cemetery

SoulGarden is proud to offer an exclusive collection of granite and glass monuments, developed in collaboration with the company Glasstone, using high-quality multi-layered glass elements.

By combining black Swedish granite, distinguished by its exceptional durability, elegance and deep tone, with light-transmitting multi-layered glass elements, we create monuments that not only preserve the memory of the departed but also bring a lighter and more peaceful atmosphere for their loved ones. A thoughtfully designed monument can turn a grave from a place of sorrow into a bright space of memories and remembrance.

The combination of natural stone and multi-layered glass opens up entirely new possibilities in memorial architecture. By refracting natural light, the glass elements give the composition depth, a gentle shimmer and visual lightness, so that even a massive monument does not feel heavy.

In the design of a grave, each material has its own symbolic meaning:

  • granite symbolises endurance, eternity, stability and dignity;
  • glass gives the monument transparency, visual lightness and light.

The union of these two contrasting materials creates a special atmosphere: memories of the departed do not fade, but remain close by, quietly and beautifully, like rays of sunlight gliding over the edges of a glass stele.

Every monument design created in the SoulGarden workshop:

  • is elegant, while also practical and technically well thought out;
  • is suitable for both individual and family graves;
  • can be complemented with metal or bronze accessories, engraving and various glass elements.

Technology and durability: how glass monuments withstand Latvian winters

Different combinations of granite and glass give each monument a unique form

One of the main questions clients ask is how durable and long-lasting such structures are in Latvian climatic conditions. Our climate is characterised by frequent temperature fluctuations around 0 °C, prolonged autumn rains, snow and high humidity.

The multi-layered glass used in our work is made in the Glasstone workshop using a special patented technology. It is not ordinary window or display glass, but a heat-treated multi-layered glass block, or high-density triplex.

Why is this construction durable?

  1. Resistance to frost and moisture. The material has no internal air pores, so moisture cannot penetrate it and does not cause cracks when it freezes.
  2. Safety and strength. In its physical and mechanical properties, multi-layered glass is on a par with natural granite. It withstands wind loads and accidental mechanical impacts.
  3. Resistance to changes in colour and transparency. Over time the glass does not become cloudy or yellowish, and even after many years it retains its transparency and shape.

A well-considered monument design using multi-layered glass ensures the structure's durability in the Baltic climate while preserving the material's original appearance and properties.

Options for adapting and personalising the design

Glass and granite monuments can be fully adapted to the client's individual wishes

All the models in our collection have been developed as ready-made design solutions. However, we recognise that every story of remembrance is unique, so any monument design can be fully adapted to the client's individual wishes.

When developing the project, you can:

  • choose the tint of the glass;
  • change the shape, geometry and finish of the granite;
  • adjust the placement of the dates and the memorial inscription;
  • add other design elements.

Thanks to the many ways the construction can be adapted, an exclusive monument design fits harmoniously both into the landscape of forest cemeteries surrounded by pines and into the setting of town cemeteries.

This collection makes it possible to create a contemporary, aesthetically clean grave design with a calm and bright atmosphere - a place to remember, reflect and feel connected to your loved ones.

Granite and coloured stone: the right combination of materials

For a monument to look harmonious, it is important to choose the right combination of stone and glass. Black Swedish granite is regarded as the classic base. Its deep, almost mirror-like tone beautifully highlights the transparency of the glass elements, creating a restrained and elegant contrast.

However, glass goes well not only with black granite. Contemporary memorial design projects can use a wide variety of coloured stone - red, brown, grey and other shades of granite. Combined with glass elements, even bold colour schemes take on a completely different character: the composition becomes lighter, more expressive and visually more interesting.

Some shades of stone that on their own might seem too massive or heavy reveal themselves quite differently thanks to the transparency of the glass and the play of light. This makes it possible to create truly unique monuments in which natural stone and glass complement each other, forming an individual design that cannot be repeated.

When creating more complex memorial ensembles, the colour and texture of the granite are chosen to suit the overall design concept, the client's wishes and the particular features of the project. High-quality coloured granite is durable and resistant to moisture, so such solutions are not only aesthetic but also practical.

Stages in making a monument with glass elements: from idea to installation

Making a combined monument is a precise technological process consisting of several important stages:

  • Consultation and discussion of the idea: we find out your wishes, the particular features of the grave and your planned budget.
  • 3D design: a detailed three-dimensional visualisation is created, allowing you to view the future monument design from different angles and assess its proportions before production begins.
  • Making the elements: the granite parts and the multi-layered glass block are made in the workshop.
  • Trial assembly and quality control: all parts are precisely fitted to one another and the fixing points are checked.
  • Delivery and installation: at the cemetery, the structure is installed on a previously prepared, strong reinforced concrete foundation, in line with the necessary installation requirements.

How much does an exclusive monument with a glass element cost?

A monument combining black Swedish granite with shimmering, light-transmitting layers of glass

High-quality glass and granite monuments for a single grave from the SoulGarden workshop cost from €1,760.00 per set.

The price of the basic set includes:

  • a granite monument (height from 80 cm);
  • a glass element;
  • a sturdy monument base.

The price does not include additional elements and services:

  • bronze letters;
  • decorative elements and crosses;
  • photoceramics or a portrait on glass.

Installation of the monument at the cemetery is also not included in the price.

A thoughtfully developed monument design can be harmoniously integrated into an overall grave landscaping project. We recommend planning the installation of the monument together with laying paving, creating a granite chippings surface or planting, so that the grave forms a unified, finished ensemble.

How to care for a monument with glass elements

Tempered glass and polished granite surfaces are practical and easy to care for, as their smooth texture does not let dirt easily soak into the material.

If the monument has been installed recently, wiping it regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, petals and other surface dirt is enough to keep it clean day to day.

Over time, rain, deposits from trees and fallen pine needles can form a natural film on the surface. In such cases we recommend a simple care routine:

  • Rinse the glass and granite surfaces with warm water.
  • Use a gentle degreasing agent, such as ordinary Fairy washing-up liquid.
  • Rinse the surfaces thoroughly with clean water.
  • Dry and polish them with a soft, dry cloth to restore the transparency and shine of the glass.
