A fieldstone monument: the beauty of the native land

Monument combining fieldstone and granite

Choosing a monument is one of the most important steps in grave landscaping. A memorial should not only mark the resting place but also reflect the personality of the deceased, their roots and their life story, while keeping its value and appearance for decades.

Fieldstone monuments hold a special place in Latvia's memorial culture. This unique natural material, shaped by the forces of nature over many centuries, symbolises endurance, stability and a close bond with one's native land.

The SoulGarden workshop offers professional manufacture and installation of fieldstone monuments. In this article we look at the unique properties of this material and its symbolic meaning, and show how a natural fieldstone becomes an exclusive work of memorial art.

Philosophy and origins: the strength of Latvia's nature

Most traditional monuments are made from industrially processed granite, quarried and precisely finished in factories. A fieldstone monument, however, represents an entirely different approach to remembrance. Fieldstone is not a man-made material – every stone is unique, with its own shape, texture, colour and character, formed by nature itself over thousands of years.

Latvian fieldstone is a local natural material with a special symbolic value. These granite and quartzite stones arrived in the Baltic region through the movement of glaciers many thousands of years ago. Since then they have lain in our land, rivers and forests, exposed to rain, wind and the harsh conditions of Baltic winters. That is why, by choosing a monument of Latvian fieldstone, loved ones emphasise the deceased's close bond with their native land, family roots and local traditions.

A memorial like this creates a true sense of eternity. In a cemetery, natural stone looks monumental, harmonious and at the same time restrained, reflecting perfectly the values characteristic of Latvian culture – respect, strength and closeness to nature. It fits equally well into old rural cemeteries and into modern memorial complexes in the cemeteries of Riga and other Latvian towns.

Technical properties and durability in the Latvian climate

From a practical and technical point of view, Latvian fieldstone is one of the most durable and long-lasting materials for making monuments. However, the selection of the stone is essential – an experienced specialist carefully checks each fieldstone to make sure it has no cracks, damage or weather-related defects.

It is often this selection process that affects the cost of the monument, as the craftsman frequently has to look at and assess several stones before finding the one best suited in quality, shape and colour range.

Because fieldstone has lain in Latvia's natural environment for centuries, it is perfectly adapted to the local climate. It is unaffected by the harsh weather typical of our region.

  • Complete frost resistance: fieldstone has proved its durability over thousands of Baltic winters. It has a very dense structure without the hidden pores and internal stresses that are sometimes found in certain imported stone materials. A specialist carefully assesses the quality of the stone before it is worked.
  • Resistance to moisture and temperature changes: a naturally stabilised fieldstone often absorbs less moisture than many quarried stones. Sudden temperature changes, frequent rain and high humidity have minimal effect on its structure, provided the stone has been chosen and checked properly. Even slight natural changes over time often give the monument a special character and a historic charm.
  • Resistance to UV radiation and weathering: natural fieldstone does not fade in the sun, lose its colour or change its structure under ultraviolet radiation or rain. That is why craftsmen choose only the most stable and well-tested stones for making monuments.

Another advantage of fieldstone monuments is that they need minimal care. The patina that forms over time looks natural and harmonious, while moss or lichen on the unworked surface of the stone often only brings out its natural beauty, its character and its close bond with the surroundings, without damaging the structure of the stone itself

The finer points of working the stone: a balance between nature and the craftsman's hand

Making a fieldstone monument is always individual handwork that requires a high level of skill, experience and artistic vision. Unlike industrially processed materials, fieldstone cannot be fitted to standard solutions. Every stone has its own shape, texture and unique range of colours – from grey and brown tones to pinkish, reddish stones or stones rich in quartz inclusions.

The craftsman's main task is to keep the balance between the natural beauty of the stone and the function of the monument. Usually only one side of the stone – the front – is worked. It is carefully cut or split to create a flat surface, which is then ground and polished.

This surface can be engraved to a high standard with:

  • the first name and surname;
  • the dates of birth and death;
  • epitaphs;
  • religious symbols;
  • decorative ornaments or individual design elements.

The back, sides and overall shape of the monument, meanwhile, keep their natural form, with all the characteristic irregularities, texture and character created by nature.

It is precisely the contrast between the unworked surface of the fieldstone and the carefully polished engraving face that makes each monument unique. No two fieldstones in nature are exactly alike, so every memorial is one of a kind.

Despite its traditional character, Latvian fieldstone opens up wide possibilities for modern memorial design. Modern cemetery architecture and burial plot landscaping are increasingly moving away from heavy, uniform solutions, preferring harmonious compositions, contrasts and combinations of different materials.

Fieldstone monuments go very well with:

  • granite;
  • wrought metal;
  • dolomite;
  • travertine;
  • bronze elements.

Fieldstone looks particularly elegant combined with dark or black polished granite. Granite can be used for borders, grave slabs, bases or other elements of the memorial complex.

The composition is also complemented by bronze and wrought-metal details – letters, crosses, vases, candle holders and other decorative elements that give the monument individuality and refinement.

Combinations of materials like these make it possible to create unique, personalised memorial complexes that keep their aesthetic value and relevance for many decades.

Examples of SoulGarden projects and ready-made solutions

To give a better idea of how the unique properties of fieldstone translate into real memorial solutions, let us look at a few examples and the most popular types of monument our clients choose.

1. Classic fieldstone monument with its natural shape preserved

This is one of the most sought-after solutions for people who appreciate the natural landscape of Latvian cemeteries and the authentic beauty of stone. For a project like this, a massive fieldstone with an expressive shape and harmonious contours is chosen. The craftsman carefully works only the front, creating a smooth surface for the engraving.

After several stages of grinding and polishing, the inscriptions are engraved on this surface, while the rest of the stone keeps its natural appearance. A Latvian fieldstone monument like this looks harmonious, natural and at the same time monumental, creating a close bond between the memory of the deceased and the surroundings.

In 2022 a complete reconstruction was carried out, creating a new ensemble of Latvian fieldstone and Scandinavian BOXUS GREY granite, which was used to enclose the plot and to make the grave slab. On the left side of the burial plot a flower bed was laid out, with a border of decorative Latvian fieldstones.

2. Complex memorial ensembles with fieldstone

A fieldstone can become the central element of a large family burial plot. In projects like these a large natural stone serves as the main stele, while granite borders, partly closed grave slabs or decorative granite chippings are used in the landscaping of the surrounding area.

This solution is most often chosen by people who wish to emphasise an ethnographic feel, Latvian identity and respect for local traditions.

In a composition like this, the fieldstone acts as the unifying element that brings the whole memorial ensemble together into a single whole. It gives the grave a sense of completeness and stability, and symbolises the strength of the family, the endurance of its roots and the bond between generations.

Reconstruction of an old grave, preserving and restoring the fieldstone monument. The fieldstone monument, made in the 1980s, was kept as the central and unifying element of the whole memorial ensemble. Modern Swedish granite slabs bearing the names of family members who passed away later were installed on both sides of the fieldstone, and the grave was enclosed with a granite border of the same material.

Memorial composition made from three parts of a single huge fieldstone weighing more than 3 tonnes

A fieldstone monument more than 2.4 metres tall, with a total weight of over 3 tonnes, was installed in 2019 as the central memorial element of a large family burial plot at Gauriņi Cemetery in Jelgava Municipality.

The memorial composition consists of three fragments of a single large fieldstone. A natural crack has been kept on the front of the monument, while the natural texture of the stone has been left untouched on the back. During installation a traditional stonemason's tool was used – a tripod, once widely used for erecting monumental memorials, as in past decades memorials were often considerably more massive than they are today.

Fieldstone also fits very well into various combinations with granite monuments, complementing the overall design concept and giving it a natural feel:

A comprehensive approach to creating a memorial from SoulGarden

Creating a dignified memorial from natural fieldstone is a complex, multi-stage process that requires not only the stonemason's skill but also precise technical and engineering calculations.

Fieldstones are characteristically heavy, with an uneven distribution of mass determined by their natural shape and high density. That is why it is important to entrust the installation of such monuments to experienced professionals. A poorly built foundation or poor-quality installation can, in the long term, cause the monument to settle or lean out of vertical.

By entrusting this responsible work to the SoulGarden team, you can be confident in the quality of the result and the longevity of the memorial. Our specialists will help at every stage of the project – from choosing the most suitable fieldstone to match your wishes and ideas, to professional engraving and safe installation in any cemetery in Latvia.

In addition to making monuments, SoulGarden offers a full range of services:

We also offer a wide range of cemetery accessories – granite vases, candle holders, wrought-metal elements and other long-lasting decorative pieces that complement the aesthetics of natural stone harmoniously.

A fieldstone monument made by SoulGarden craftsmen will preserve the memory of your loved one for many generations, combining the strength of nature, quality craftsmanship and lasting value.
