Exclusive monuments: a personal approach and thoughtful design

An example of the individually made exclusive monument “Stairway to Heaven”

A cemetery is like a book of remembrance: among its quiet avenues lie people’s destinies, history and the culture of earlier generations. Every person is a unique individual with their own life story, and when a loved one passes away, there is a natural wish to preserve their memory in a dignified and aesthetically refined way.

In recent years, standard monuments have increasingly been replaced by thoughtful, individual solutions. People want the choice of monument to reflect the personality, values and life story of the deceased.

That is why exclusive monuments made to an individually developed design project are becoming a special way of expressing love and respect, while preserving the memory of a loved one for future generations.

In this article, we look in detail at what makes up the aesthetics of an exclusive memorial complex and how 3D visualisation helps avoid mistakes in grave landscaping, and we introduce the SoulGarden workshop’s approach and the unique projects it has carried out in cemeteries in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia.

What makes a monument exclusive: materials and technologies

In memorial architecture, the term “exclusivity” means much more than an unusual shape. It is defined above all by high-quality stone working, harmonious proportions and rare, long-lasting materials.

Exclusive monuments are designed to serve for generations, keeping their aesthetic expressiveness and durability even in the changeable Baltic climate.

Creating a well-considered premium monument rests on a combination of classical traditions and contemporary artistic solutions:

  • Rare and valuable types of stone: for example, deep black, grey or green Swedish granite, Finnish Hallandia Gneis with its unique texture, and white Italian Carrara marble.
  • A combination of contrasting textures: the monumental strength of granite is combined with the aesthetic lightness of multi-layered art glass, giving the monument a subtle sparkle and visual lightness.
  • Italian and German accessories: detailed bronze elements, such as pieces by the craftsmen of Sacred Art Strassacker, as well as individually forged elements, gilding and bas-reliefs.
  • Complex handwork and technological processing: combinations of mirror polishing, rough-worked stone surfaces, artistic carving and engraved portraits.

When creating exclusive monuments, SoulGarden specialists do not simply combine stone and metal: they carefully select the materials and the ways they are worked, so that every detail fits harmoniously into the setting of the particular grave – whether in a forest cemetery surrounded by pines or in the open landscape of a city cemetery.

Experience embodied in stone: the SoulGarden philosophy

The story of the SoulGarden workshop began in 2002, one winter when the company’s founder, Inese, first heard the sound of granite as it was being worked. It was like the clear ring of a bell, with a long echo and a lasting vibration. As she came to know various, rarer types of stone more closely, she discovered that every granite has its own character, strength and “sound” – just as every person’s life story does.

This experience has been the foundation of SoulGarden’s work since 2002. Through decades of meeting, day after day, people who have lost a loved one, Inese formulated the workshop’s main principle: a monument is not just worked stone. It holds respect and a family’s story, becoming a link between generations.

The team’s professional task is to sense the individuality of each person’s story, listen to the client’s wishes and embody them in long-lasting materials with the greatest precision.

Over the years, a strong team has formed around Inese, made up of qualified specialists, experienced masters of traditional stone working and contemporary designers. The team regularly adds to its professional knowledge at international memorial industry exhibitions in Europe, while preserving stone-working traditions tested over generations.

When you choose a monument, SoulGarden specialists help you find a solution in which professional precision and craftsmanship are combined with the ability to understand the client’s wishes and the individuality of each story of remembrance.

3D design of monuments: from idea to accurate visualisation

Sketches of work by Inese Dimdāne

When planning an exclusive monument, it is hard to imagine the end result from drawings or photographs of other completed work alone. Granite, non-ferrous metals, glass and marble each interact differently with light and their surroundings. That is why 3D design is one of the most important stages in creating an individual memorial complex.

Three-dimensional visualisation makes it possible to address several important tasks:

  • Assess proportions accurately: the future monument can be viewed from different angles, and its dimensions, the thickness of the slabs, the height of the grave fence and the proportions of all the elements to one another can be judged before any stone working begins.
  • Show materials and textures realistically: the 3D model can reproduce the colour and texture of Swedish or Finnish granite, the sheen of polished surfaces, the translucency of multi-layered glass and the details of bronze accessories.
  • Adapt the project to the particular grave: the design takes into account the features of the specific site – the terrain, the position of trees and the existing boundaries.
  • Control costs and make changes in good time: at the 3D visualisation stage it is possible to change the geometry of the structure, choose a different shade of stone or adjust the placement of inscriptions, reducing the need for changes once manufacture is under way.

For SoulGarden clients, a 3D design is not just a technical drawing. It lets you see the intended result clearly before anything is made and make sure that the monument’s design, proportions and combinations of materials match the original idea.

A considered approach to creating a monument: step by step, without haste

There is no place for haste in creating an individual memorial complex. Soul Garden specialists always point out that grave landscaping is a long-term investment in preserving remembrance, so it is far more important to go through all the stages of the work carefully and in order than to hurry at the expense of quality.

A memorial complex is created in several successive stages:

  • Consultation and discussion of the idea: we listen to the family’s story, assess the features of the grave and discuss your wishes regarding the design and the planned budget.
  • Development of the 3D design: a detailed three-dimensional model is created, the proportions and combinations of materials are chosen, and the final sketch of the project is agreed.
  • Preparing and working the stone: the granite is worked both by hand and with high-precision milling equipment, the multi-layered glass is made, and the bronze elements are prepared or delivered.
  • Trial assembly: in the workshop, the fit of all the structural elements and fixings is checked and precisely adjusted to ensure a flawless end result.
  • Professional installation: the memorial complex is installed on a durable reinforced concrete foundation, in line with the necessary construction requirements and with an official guarantee.

A well-considered choice of monument and a professional approach at every stage make it possible to create a memorial complex that will keep its appearance and quality for several generations.
