3D design of monuments and burial plots: from concept to completion

3D design makes it possible to visualise even the simplest sketch in detail

For most families, putting up a monument or creating a memorial ensemble happens only once. It is a way of showing respect and preserving the memory of loved ones for many decades. That is why it is important to approach the landscaping of a grave thoughtfully and responsibly. Every detail of a memorial will keep its meaning for many generations, so hasty decisions have no place in this process.

In practice, people often run into various difficulties. An old family grave frequently needs complete reconstruction, or there is a wish to change the existing design. Any changes once work with natural stone has begun are time-consuming and expensive. A mistake in choosing the shape, the colour of the granite or the arrangement of the elements can be costly, and correcting it on a finished piece is often very difficult.

Today, memorial design makes use of technologies that have long been standard in architecture and industrial design. One of them is 3D design.

It turns ideas into a digital model, so you can see the future memorial before production begins.

This approach lets you assess in detail how the future memorial will look, how the materials work together, the stone textures and the effect of light, and it helps to avoid mistakes and unnecessary expense.

In this article we look at the main advantages of 3D design and explain why it is becoming an integral part of high-quality grave landscaping.

You will learn how a digital project is created – from the first sketch to a photorealistic visualisation – how to prepare for ordering a project, how to plan your budget, and why accurate drawings are one of the most important conditions for a successful result.

Why is 3D design of a grave or monument needed?

3D design of monuments and memorials is a relatively new field, but experience shows that it is a very important stage. It helps to avoid misunderstandings, mistakes and disappointment, especially at an emotionally difficult time after the loss of a loved one.

To create a well-thought-out memorial or reconstruct a family grave, you should not rely on word-of-mouth advice alone. Experience shows that there are not many specialists who can offer high-quality design and technical advice in line with current trends.

The main advantages of 3D modelling:
  • An accurate preview of the result: the digital model lets you judge as precisely as possible how the finished memorial will look.

  • Cost optimisation: before production, elements of the project can be changed, complex details simplified or other materials chosen, reducing the overall cost.

  • Less risk of mistakes: mistakes in making stone pieces are expensive. In a digital model it is much easier to change the colour, the finish or the composition until the desired result is achieved.

  • Ordering from a distance: thanks to 3D design, a memorial can also be ordered remotely, from another Latvian town or from abroad.

  • Extra certainty for the maker: the manufacturer receives precise drawings, dimensions and technical specifications, which reduces the likelihood of mistakes and prevents unforeseen losses.

Stages of work: from sketch to visualisation

At Soul Garden, developing a 3D project involves three key stages, which lead to a result that fully matches the client's vision and expectations.

From sketch to 3D project

1. The designer's sketch of the monument

At this stage an experienced specialist draws a sketch – an outline of how the monument or the whole memorial might look. It is a time-consuming and mutually creative process, aimed at bringing your wishes as close to reality as possible. The purpose of the sketch is to present the idea as a harmonious whole for the memorial ensemble.

2. 2D modelling of the monument

2D modelling of monuments using graphics software

Using graphics software, the artist-designer creates the shape of the monument and the details of the composition to specific dimensions. This is where inscriptions, portraits, images and accessories are placed. The client can see the exact proportions of the chosen size and text. At this stage the shape can quickly be adjusted and the type of granite or marble changed, carefully matching the materials and the colour palette.

3. 3D visualisation of the monument

Virtual representation of the project in 3D

This is the final stage, in which the project is built virtually down to the smallest detail. It corresponds exactly to how the memorial will look in reality, with all the intended dimensions. The model includes detailed drawings of all the elements. Only once the client is satisfied that the result meets their expectations can production begin.

Interactive example: take a look at a real 3D project for a memorial already installed at Katlakalns Cemetery. You can not only see the end result in the photographs below, but also open the 3D plan in your browser. The project can be rotated and viewed from all sides, so you can appreciate the level of detail in each element.

The 3D model also includes detailed drawings and dimensions of all the elements. This gives the manufacturer or craftsman complete clarity about exactly what needs to be made.

What to do if you would like to order a 3D design for a memorial

The grave after the planned monument was made and installed at Katlakalns Cemetery in June 2022

Choosing a monument or landscaping a grave is not a simple task, as few people have dealt with it before. Only a professional service provider can give sound advice. We recommend the following steps:

  1. Concept: agree with your relatives on what kind of monument you would like. You can look for examples online or even draw your idea by hand.

  2. A specialist's help: if you are unsure what you want, our design specialist will help you choose the most suitable option, listening to all your wishes and feelings and sketching the idea during the conversation itself. Such a consultation usually lasts 1–2 hours.

  3. Photographs: without a photograph of the grave it is not possible to estimate the expected cost accurately. A SoulGarden specialist offers online consultations free of charge, but a visit to the site or a meeting at the office is a paid service (€20–50).

  4. Discussing the budget: even if you have a set budget, it is important to discuss what can be achieved with it. Searching for the “cheapest” offer on your own sometimes takes more time and energy than a proper consultation with a specialist in the field.

  5. Technical parameters: when work on the project begins, it is best to discuss the terrain and location of the grave straight away, as the cost of building the foundations and of installation will depend on them.

3D project costs and ordering terms

SoulGarden offers the full cycle of monument making and grave landscaping – from developing the 3D project to installing monuments and other grave elements throughout Latvia.

  • Project price: a complete 3D project costs from €150 to €250. With the finished project you can approach any manufacturer.
  • Free project: if you entrust the realisation of the project to our company, the 3D design will be free of charge (the amount paid will be deducted from the total quote).

Payment terms and guarantees:

  1. You pay a deposit for developing the project (€150–250).
  2. When the production contract is signed, 50% of the order amount is paid.
  3. When the work in the workshop is completed, 30% is paid.
  4. The remaining 20% is paid after installation at the cemetery.

In line with the approved 3D visualisation, you will receive a result that matches what was planned 100%, a granite quality certificate and a guarantee on the installation work.
